We don’t really do beer reviews on Brews Travelers, but I had been looking forward to trying Burton Baton since I read some other reviews. It seemed like the perfect beer for me. A Strong Ale combined with 90 minute IPA. Well, is it what the doctor ordered?
Yes! It is.
I would compare this beer to a great movie.
- It has a great storyline – It was made for Michael Jackson’s rare beer club. It has elements of both the UK and the USA. The labels artist is from the UK and currently resides in Chicago. The name Burton refers to a small town in the middle of England that is the brewing capital of England. It is also the first place that the IPA was brewed.
- Good Direction – This is the clear idea of bringing oak aged Old Ale with a well balanced 90 Minute IPA. This means no wavering and keeping with the story line of a blend between the old and new. Old and new beer and the old world with the new world of craft beer. History and the present time together as one.
- Great Editing – To me, this is the recipe and the process. Actually knowing what is needed in the beer and keeping unnecessary elements out.
- A good producer or director – When it comes to pushing the envelope, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, may well be the master of getting his stars (water, yeast, hops and malt) to take direction and not to get out of line.
- And finally, good talent – in this case, Pilsner, Crystal and Amber malt along with Ale Yeast (1 American, 1 English) and Warrior and Glacier Hops.
When I first read about this beer, I was intrigued, excited and eager to get a taste. I shared my first bottle with QW and we both agreed that this was such a unique and well-balanced beer. It had a slight bitterness that gave way to a balanced and smooth taste. This beer is a great introduction to craft beer for non-enthusiasts. QW enjoyed the ever so slight vanilla flavor that went so well with the citrusy notes. You know, I like hoppy beers and malty beers are a taste that I am acquiring daily, but when you put a beer together that can blend the best of both worlds it is a definite win-win. This is truly one of my new favorites and a must try for those just getting into craft beer. I think even Steven Spielberg would be happy with this beer experience. Cheers!
